Criminal defence — every charge, every courtroom.
Kim Edward practises exclusively in criminal law. She does not represent impaired drivers; for every other criminal charge, she is ready to fight for you.
When everything is on the line, you need experience.
In Canada, murder is the most serious offence a person can be charged with. Whether the charge is first-degree, second-degree, or manslaughter, the Crown's evidence on planning and deliberation is the key battleground. Kim has defended 28 murder cases since 1988 — and she knows how to dismantle that evidence, motion by motion.
From bail and pre-trial Crown screening, through preliminary hearing, to trial and (where necessary) appeal — Kim builds a defence that the case actually requires, not a template.
Possession, trafficking, production, importing.
Drug offences are among the most aggressively prosecuted charges in Canada — and they almost inevitably involve Charter issues. Searches, seizures, wiretaps, informants: each one is an opportunity to argue that police acted unlawfully, and to ask that the resulting evidence be excluded.
Kim has spent her career challenging Crown evidence in drug cases, and she will look at every angle: s. 8 (unreasonable search), s. 9 (arbitrary detention), s. 10 (right to counsel), and s. 24(2) (exclusion of evidence).
Firearms charges carry life-long consequences.
Weapons offences — possession, careless storage, possession for a dangerous purpose, prohibited and restricted firearms — frequently carry mandatory minimum sentences and immigration consequences. Almost any object can be alleged to be a "weapon" depending on the circumstances.
Kim works carefully through the Crown's evidence: was the firearm operable, was it in the accused's "knowledge and control," was the search lawful, was the seizure properly continuous. Every element matters.
Among the most consequential charges a person can face.
A sexual assault conviction brings a sentence — and a stigma that often follows long past it. Future employment, immigration status, family law issues, and registration obligations can all be affected.
Kim handles these matters with discretion, care, and the courtroom craft that comes from decades of credibility-based trials. She is unflinching in cross-examination, careful in case theory, and respectful with every client.
When the courtroom collides with home life.
Domestic matters move quickly through the Hamilton courts, often with no-contact conditions that can be devastating to family life before any evidence has been tested. Kim helps you navigate bail variations, complainant statements, and the difficult interplay with family law — with the steady hand and judgement that only comes from doing this for decades.
A specialty Kim has defended for over thirty years.
Robbery cases — from convenience-store hold-ups to bank robberies — usually turn on identification, surveillance, and the credibility of accomplice or co-accused witnesses. Kim's trial experience in these matters is significant; she knows the science behind eyewitness identification, the law of joint enterprise, and how to test a Crown's narrative in real time.
Where every document matters.
Fraud, theft, breach of trust, and similar document-heavy matters require patient, painstaking preparation. Kim spends the time the file requires — combing disclosure, building chronologies, and finding the small inconsistencies that decide big cases.
Protecting a young person's future.
Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, young people have rights and protections that differ from adult court — and outcomes here can shape the rest of their lives. Kim represents young people from first appearance through resolution, with a clear focus on outcomes that preserve their education, employment, and immigration options.
Defence is only half the work.
